MARTA's Automated Fare Collection System based on Smart Card technology

Background
MARTA has moved to a new fare collection system. The new Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system provides MARTA patrons with a new faregate structure and a new way to purchase fare media system-wide.

In conjunction with the Breeze Card, MARTA has also replaced existing equipment with new rail station faregates, bus fareboxes, and Breeze Vending Machines.

Cubic Transportation Systems of San Diego, California, provided most of the fare collection equipment for this project. Cubic was chosen after MARTA's legal staff and contract professionals oversaw a carefully managed procurement process.
