I-20 East Corridor Details

Description
Southeastern DeKalb County has grown dramatically in the past 20 years. Thousands of new housing units have opened or are planned in the areas surrounding the Mall at Stonecrest and along major arterial roads. As a result, congestion has risen sharply in the Interstate 20 corridor, particularly east of I-285. MARTA has identified a solution that will improve mobility, access, and support increased economic development while maintaining the environment. This solution includes a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), extending from downtown Atlanta to a location near the Mall at Stonecrest via I-20 east. The service would operate predominantly in an exclusive busway.. This dedicated busway could be upgraded to rail transit when ridership and land use patterns warrant. This alternative was approved by the MARTA Board as the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) in December 2004.
The implementation of the BRT system will likely occur in phases with the initial phase likely to extend to Candler Road near the Gallery at South DeKalb. The BRT system will be designed so that it interfaces with the planned Belt Line.
The next step is to complete the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).
Current Documents and Information
Proposed Alignment
The proposed alignment was arrived at after screening all proposed alignment alternatives and technologies for fatal flaws. Please be aware that the number of stations and exact routing is not set in stone, and will not be finalized until after the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) has been approved by the Federal Transit Administration. In addition the precise routing into the downtown area has yet to be finalized.
Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) Report
The LPA Report provides detailed information on how each alternative was evaluated with the help of the community. In addition, the Report identifies the preferred technology and alignment for which environmental impacts will be assessed. The document is presented as a whole and by chapters for your convenience.
