MARTA POLICE K-9 UNIT PROVIDES SECURITY AT DEMOCRATIC
NATIONAL CONVENTION
ATLANTA—MARTA’s K-9 Explosive Detection
team assisted with security efforts for the Democratic
National Convention held in Boston July 26-29. All of
their expenses were paid for by the Transportation Security
Administration (TSA).
The MARTA Police Department, led by Chief Gene Wilson,
is a full-service police agency dedicated to reducing
actual crime and improving the perception of crime on
the system. MARTA was the first transit agency in the
nation to receive TSA-certified dogs in a pilot program
begun in 2000. This same team was also recruited to
provide security for the G-8 Summit recently held in
Savannah.
Comprised of MARTA’s 297 sworn officers and
43 civilian employees, the MARTA police department is
one of only three transit police agency in the U.S.
and one of only 33 agencies in Georgia to be nationally
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in 1996. CALEA accreditation
is based on extensive evaluation of the department including
the areas of administration, organization, roles and
responsibilities, cooperative relationships with other
jurisdictions, crime prevention, community relations,
and crime analysis. MARTA was recently earned its third
reaccreditation in March.
