MARTA NAMES SCOTT SMITH DIRECTOR OF GOVERNMENT & COMMUNITY RELATIONS

ATLANTA—Scott Smith was recently named Director of Government & Community Relations for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). Smith began his new post June 28.

“Mr. Smith brings to MARTA a wealth of experience in external affairs, regulatory affairs, and coalition building,” said MARTA General Manager/ CEO Nathaniel P. Ford, Sr. “His years of experience in local, state and federal government, together with his capability to forge new relationships with key stakeholders will be a valuable asset to the Authority.”

Prior to joining MARTA, Smith worked with Southern Company for 24 years. Most recently he served as Director of External Affairs for Southern Energy Inc./Mirant Americas Inc. in Atlanta, and Washington DC. In this role, Smith developed and successfully executed external affairs market entry strategies for power plant acquisitions, new builds and plant expansions ($450M-$950M) in Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, California, Virginia, and Nevada. Smith also served as Coordinator, Governmental Affairs, where he developed and handled day-to-day oversight of the Washington DC office’s state affairs and the company’s political action committee. He also served as chairman of Edison Electrical Institute’s State Affairs Committee for six years and oversaw the successful resolution of more than 45 state public policy issues that were national in scope. Smith also served as a registered lobbyist in the US Senate and House of Representatives.

A native of the Mississippi Gulf coast, Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Mississippi. He is married to Ann Smith and they reside in Atlanta.
