Rules and Safety
MARTA
is very proud of its long-standing safety record, which has
won national and international awards. We have accreditation
by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies
(CALEA) and certified by the State of Georgia. MARTA offers
one of the finest police departments in the country. We help
keep safety standards high, and we ask our customers to help
by following these safety and security precautions:
As a Passenger
Please
do not enter the track or right-of-way areas because the rail
lines carry fatally high voltages.
Please stand back while buses and trains approach. Attempt
to board only after vehicles have come to a complete stop
and riders have exited the vehicles.
Always take your seat promptly after boarding a bus or train.
Hold onto handrails if you are standing.
Be alert in public surroundings.
Please do not run up or down escalators. If you are carrying
a garment bag or pushing a stroller, please use the elevator.
Bicyclists: please keep safety and other customers in mind
when using the rail system. Keep your bike out of aisle and
away from the doors. Bike racks are installed on the front of the buses.
Please be wary of pickpockets in all public places. Keep your
purse close to your body, and always carry your wallet in
an inside pocket.
Beware of commotions that might be caused
to distract you while someone picks your pocket.
As a Pedestrian
Walk
confidently and stay alert. Be aware of the people around
you.
When possible, walk with a buddy or group.
If you think you are being followed, turn around and look
for the nearest building for help, or cross the street and
walk in the opposite direction.
In a parking lot, remember where your car is parked and get
your keys out early. Walk purposefully to your car, and keep
an eye out for anything unusual.
If you are using headphones, keep the volume low so that you
can hear surrounding noise.
Remember if you need help or want to report a crime, pick
up the blue telephone located on all platforms and concourses.
This phone connects you to the MARTA Police.
Getting Help
MARTA Police officers constantly patrol the system, both
in regular and in random beats. They have the same training,
certification, rights and powers as any Georgia law enforcement
officer. Feel free to approach an officer for help.
To call MARTA Police
In
a rail station, pick up a white or blue phone. (To report
a fire, use the red phone.)
On a train, use the emergency intercom which is located at
the front end of every railcar and ask the operator for help.
On a bus, ask the driver to use the on-board phone to call
for help.
Call MARTA Police, dial (404) 848-4911.
