The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and Clifton Corridor Transportation Management Association (CCTMA) have partnered to conduct the Clifton Corridor Transit Initiative - Alternatives Analysis.
The Clifton Corridor Alternatives Analysis involves investigating the need for high-capacity transit connections between the Lindbergh Center/Armour Yard area in north-central Atlanta to Clifton Road employment centers and the City of Decatur in west-central DeKalb County. The Clifton Corridor includes some of the largest activity centers in metro Atlanta without convenient access to the interstate system or MARTA rail connections. These conditions have created high levels of traffic congestion on a severely limited network of roadways. The corridor is home to a number of well established residential communities and several major employers such as Emory University, Emory Healthcare, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Veterans Administration Medical Center & Regional Offices, and the DeKalb Medical Center.
The study will result in the selection of a specific alignment and technology that best meets the transit needs for the corridor. Once this selection has been made an environmental impact statement will be developed followed by engineering and design activities.
A comprehensive public outreach effort is underway and will include many methods of communication and opportunities for community involvement. The project team in conjunction with the community have identified eight (8) primary goals that a project emerging from the Alternatives Analysis should meet:
Goal 1: Serve existing and projected mobility demands
Goal 2: Expand transportation choices
Goal 3: Expand transit accessibility and connectivity
Goal 4: Promote a safe transportation network
Goal 5: Improve disaster responsiveness
Goal 6: Strengthen desireable land use patterns and economic development opportunities
Goal 7: Minimize adverse environmental impacts
Goal 8: Provide a cost-effective and efficient transportation investment strategy
