Corridor Genesis - South DeKalb Lindbergh Major Investment Study (2000)

The I-20 East Corridor and Clifton Corridor were once a part of a single study effort.  This analysis details travel patterns and proposed transit options identified in the late 1990s that spanned the entire southeastern and central portions of DeKalb County from the Linbergh Center area all the way to I-20.

Alternative Development Maps

Pre-screening Alternatives

  • PDF Potential Alignment Corridors: Includes the set of potential alignments refined from community input obtained during the Public Information Open Houses held on March 16th and 23rd.  Alignments identified on the map that did not meet the purpose and need for the project were eliminated from further analysis.  See the Alternatives Advancing to Screen I Analysis map below.

Screen I (Initial Screening) Alternatives Assessed

  • PDF Alternatives Advancing to Screen I Analysis (MODIFIED-Summer 2010): Identifies the three (3) surviving alignment corridors and couples each alignment with a viable transit technology resulting in six (6) proposed alternatives.  The map displays how bus rapid transit, light rail transit, or a hybrid of both light rail and heavy rail transit (heavy rail is only viable between Lindbergh Center and North Decatur Road adjacent to the CSX freight line) might serve the study area.
  • PDF Alternatives Advancing to Screen I Analysis (MODIFIED-Winter 2010/2011): Includes adjustments made upon completing outreach activities during the Spring, Summer, and early Fall 2010.  This map was used as a poster during the most recent Technical Advisory and Stakeholder Advisory Committee meetings.  All proposed Light Rail and Bus Rapid Transit options have been redirected to Avondale Station - however a bus circulator linking downtown Decatur to the CDC/Emory/VA area is recommended for further study.

Screen I (Initial Screening) Results Maps

  • PDF Alternatives Resulting from Screen I Analysis [NEW]: This map depicts the three (3) transit options that are recommended for advancement into the Screen 2 process.  These options include light rail (LRT1) bus rapid transit (BRT1) and heavy rail (HRT4).

Special Scenarios to be Assessed in Screen 2

  • PDF Combined Technology Scenario 1: This map depicts a transit option that combines heavy rail (HRT4) with bus rapid transit (BRT1) Heavy rail would be extended into the corridor to a potential station near North Decatur and Clairmont Road.  Bus rapid transit would only operate from North Decatur/Clairmont Road Station to Avondale Station via DeKalb Medical Center.
  • PDF Combined Technology Scenario 2: This map depics a transit option that combines heavy rail (HRT4) with light rail transit (LRT1).  The Heavy rail would operate similar to Scenario 1.  Light rail transit would only operate from the North Decatur/Clairmont Road Station to Avondale Station via the DeKalb Medical Center.
  • PDF Combined Technology Scenario 3: This map depics a transit option that combines heavy rail (HRT4) with light rail (LRT1).  The heavy and light rail vehicles would share the same trackage between the Lindbergh Center area and the proposed station near North Decatur and Clairmont Road.  The light rail will continue from this point to Avondale Station similar to Scenario 2.

Travel Zone Maps

To help facilitate discussion, the study area was paritioned into three travel zones.  Each zone was intended to help focus attention on travel patterns occuring within the specific delineated area, and to help identify activity nodes that might be conducive to the development of a transit stop.  The green or orange lines identified in the zone maps represent connections and transit stop locations discussed with the Stakeholder Advisory Committee and with attendees who participated in the Open Houses on March 16th and 23rd.  Portions of streets or roads where participants felt widening for transit usage purposes might be problematic were identified as Areas of Concern on the map.  Only lines drawn that fell within the study area travel zones are represented in each zone map.  The Community Transit Connection Map in the next section represents all the ideas drawn in by members of the community.

  • PDF Travel Zone 3: MARTA Red/Gold Line to MARTA Blue Line (Includes areas outside of Travel Zones 1 and 2)

  • PDF Goals and Objectives: Details the relationship between identified problems and specific goals and objectives.
  • PDF Existing Transit: Identifies existing MARTA rail, MARTA bus, and CCTMA shuttle services.
  • PDF Peak Afternoon Levels of Service: Roadway segments shaded to indicate level-of-service (LOS) during the afternoon period between 3PM and 7PM.  LOS A through F is a measure of delay experienced by drivers due to traffic volume relative to roadway capacity.  LOS A means drivers experience no delay due to light traffic volume relative to roadway capacity.  LOS F means drivers experience extreme delay and long waits at intersections.
  • PDF Population and Employment (PDF, 5.2 MB): Existing and forecast (2030) population and employment by traffic analysis zone (TAZ)
  • PDF Transit Technologies: Description of technologies that will be considered as part of the Alternatives Analysis process

  • PDF Community Transit Connections: The map illustrates possible transit connection points between points of interest within the Clifton Corridor Study Area and beyond.  The connections were drawn by participants in the Open House events held on March 16th and 23rd, 2010.
