Sustanability FAQs

What are CFLs?

CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Light. CFL light bulbs use up to 75% less energy than your typical incandescent light bulb and they can last up to 10 times longer! (Energy Star)

Why should I unplug appliances and chargers when I'm not using them?

Most appliances and chargers continue to some draw power even when they're turned off.  According to the Department of Energy this accounts for more than half of the energy used by consumer electronics. To save energy, plug appliances like TV’s, computers, and cell phone chargers into a power strip and switch it to 'off' when you're not using them! (DOE)

Does it take more energy to turn on a light bulb than to run it?

No.  Turn the lights off when you’re not using them.  For fluorescent light bulbs there is a split-second increase in power demand when a light turns on.  It is generally most cost effective to turn off your fluorescent light bulbs if you’re not going to be using them for 15 minutes or more. (DOE)

What can I do to help save energy at MARTA?

Here are 3 things you can do to help MARTA save energy:
1. Set sleep mode on your computer and shut it down each night.
2. Turn out the lights when you leave an unoccupied room or area.
3. Unplug appliances and chargers when they aren't being used.

How much water is wasted by a dripping faucet?

A hot water faucet that leaks one drop per second can add up to 165 gallons a month. That's about the same amount of water a person uses in two days! (Average use is about 80-100 gallons per day.)

What is phantom energy?

Phantom energy is the term given for the energy that electronic devises use even when they’re “off.”  Chargers for cell phones, microwave ovens, printers, coffee makers and other gadgets draw energy even when they're not in use. Appliances like televisions, computer monitors and DVD players can also draw power whenever they're plugged into an outlet.  “Phantom energy" accounts for about 5% of the average home's electricity use.
