MARTA today launched a color-coded rail-line identification system that’s designed to help transit riders more easily navigate the system. The changes coincide with the implementation of a 25-cent base fare increase and an additional $1 for parking at MARTA lots, austerity measures that were approved by the Authority’s Board of Directors to help ensure the future of transit in metro Atlanta.
“Even though we are confronting the biggest financial challenge the system has ever faced, we remain committed to improving customer service and safety for our riders,” said MARTA General Manager Beverly Scott. “The changes we’re making in our rail-line identification system will help both frequent and occasional users of our system. Our goal is to ensure that customers continue to move safely through the system without feeling overwhelmed.”
Under the new identification system, main rail lines – and their deviating branches – will be identified by four primary colors. The changes will minimize confusion, especially for first-time customers, those traveling on lines that split as well as visitors from other cities who are likely more accustomed to color-coded rail systems. Transit systems across the country typically identify rail lines by color rather than the “end-of-line” designations MARTA currently uses.
In addition to the fare increase and color rail lines, a change in policy regarding children’s fares also becomes effective today. Now children’s fares will be based on height rather that age. Children 46 inches or under ride free when accompanied by a paying adult with a maximum of four (4) children per paying adult. Indicators to measure a child’s height will be available on buses and in the stations.
The changes in the rail line identification system are part of an overall update of MARTA’s graphic standards. The new standards will eventually be incorporated throughout the system as vehicles and system equipment are rehabilitated or replaced. MARTA will also be revising its written materials to make it easier and simpler for riders to use the system and customer service representatives are available during regular service hours to provide further assistance at 404.848.5000. As all customer communications had to be updated it was economical to include the rail line color system with these updates.
The 25-cent base fare increase and $1 parking fee hike will also go into effect Oct. 1. Both were approved by the MARTA Board of Directors in an effort to keep MARTA afloat during one of the most difficult financial challenges the system has ever faced. This is the first time MARTA has raised its fares in eight years.
“We’d like to thank our valued customers for their sacrifice during this time of economic crisis for MARTA,” said Dr. Scott. “We recognize that it’s a tough time for our riders as well. But the tough economic times create an opportunity for our region and state to come together to support and protect mass transit. We’ve all seen the economic and environmental benefits mass transit has brought to our region and state. But we are at a critical crossroads. To keep transit and the many benefits it provides, we’ll need new support from our region and state.”
